Northampton to London Euston: first train 05:03, last 23:28, 50 minutes at best. Fares from £9, plus every October engineering change, with buses 26 to 29 Oct.
Northampton to London by train takes 50 minutes at best, direct to Euston, with the first train at 05:03 and advance singles from £9. Northampton is one of the few towns of its size where the train to London is genuinely quick and genuinely frequent. The fastest service does the 59 miles to Euston in 50 minutes. The catch is that most services do not: the average journey is over an hour and ten minutes, because the same line carries stopping trains that call at a dozen places on the way. Knowing which is which is worth about twenty minutes each way, every day.
The service in short
| What | Detail |
|---|---|
| Terminal | London Euston |
| Station operator | London Northwestern Railway |
| Fastest journey | 50 minutes |
| Average journey | 1 hour 11 minutes |
| Direct trains a day | Up to 60 |
| Peak frequency | Up to 4 an hour |
| Distance | 59 miles (95 km) |
| Annual season ticket | £7,352 |
| Cheapest advance single | From £9 |
Northampton sits on the Northampton Loop of the West Coast Main Line, the route that leaves the fast line at Hanslope and rejoins it at Rugby. Trains are operated by London Northwestern Railway, which also manages the station. That loop is the reason for the wide spread in journey times: it is the same track used by the stopping service, so a train that calls at Wolverton, Bletchley, Leighton Buzzard, Tring, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and Watford Junction will take half as long again as one that runs fast to Milton Keynes Central and then straight through.
Northampton to London: first train, last train and the fare range
These are London Northwestern Railway’s own figures for the route, read from its Northampton to London Euston page on Tuesday 23 September 2026:
| What | London Northwestern Railway says |
|---|---|
| First train | 05:03 |
| Last train | 23:28 |
| Fastest journey | 50 minutes, direct |
| Typical journey | About 1 hour 3 minutes |
| Trains per hour | 2 |
| Trains per day | 42 |
| Advance single from | £9 |
| Super Off-Peak Day Single | £20.60 |
| Super Off-Peak Day Return | £31.80 |
| Off-Peak Day Single | £34.30 |
Two things in that table are worth arguing with, and both change what you should do.
The operator’s “42 trains per day” is not the same count as the up to 60 direct trains quoted by the booking sites. The larger number sweeps in Avanti West Coast services that call at Northampton and the trains that only run part of the way. If you are planning a commute, 42 is the honest figure for a normal weekday, and it works out at the two an hour London Northwestern quotes across an 18 and a half hour service day.
The gap between the fastest and the typical train is the real cost. Fifty minutes against a typical 1 hour 3 minutes is 13 minutes each way on the operator’s own numbers, and on the slowest stopping services it is worse than that, because the Northampton Loop carries the all-stations trains through Wolverton, Bletchley, Leighton Buzzard, Tring, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and Watford Junction. Picking the departure rather than turning up is worth roughly half an hour a day.
The fare ladder is steep at the top. An Off-Peak Day Single at £34.30 is £13.70 more than the Super Off-Peak version of the same journey, so the hour you leave decides more than a third of the price. Advance singles start at £9, which is a quarter of the Off-Peak walk-up, and they are the only fares that make an occasional trip cheap.
Northampton to London disruption: every change in October 2026
Checked against London Northwestern Railway’s own engineering calendar on Saturday 3 October 2026. The operator has now published the whole of October. There is no all-day closure of the Northampton line this month, but there is one week of evening buses that will catch anyone coming home late, and two Sundays when Avanti’s Northampton calls disappear.
- Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October. Reduced late night and morning service at Bushey on the Euston to Northampton route.
- Sunday 4 October. Engineering at Rugby. Until about 11:50 London Northwestern trains via Rugby are retimed, and Avanti West Coast trains are diverted and do not run via Northampton.
- Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October. Amended London Northwestern services to and from Bushey between Euston and Northampton.
- Monday 12 to Friday 16 October. Amended late night and early morning trains between Euston and Northampton via Bushey.
- Saturday 17 October. Lines closed between Euston and North Wembley. Tring terminators do not run, and trains from Euston to Milton Keynes Central, Northampton and Birmingham New Street leave Euston slightly earlier than timetabled, so check your departure time on the day. Bushey alterations continue into Sunday 18 October.
- Sunday 25 October. Engineering in the Northampton, Rugby and Nuneaton area. From 09:00 to the end of the day, Avanti trains that normally run via Northampton take another route. Before 11:50, London Northwestern trains between Euston or Northampton and Birmingham New Street are retimed by a few minutes.
- Monday 26 to Thursday 29 October, the one to plan around. All lines close in the Northampton area in the evenings. After 22:00 each night, buses replace trains between Milton Keynes Central and Northampton. The 22:06 Birmingham New Street to Euston runs from Rugby at 22:54 and does not call at Northampton or Long Buckby. Bushey alterations also run late at night from 26 to 30 October.
- Saturday 31 October. The 00:09 and 00:39 Euston to Northampton trains do not call at Bushey.
That week is the West Northamptonshire October half term (26 to 30 October), so if you are heading to London for an evening out between the 26th and the 29th, expect the journey home after 22:00 to finish on a bus from Milton Keynes Central. Allow extra time: the operator warns replacement buses may be busier than usual.
The operator’s own warning on these is that alterations are sometimes published before they reach the National Rail journey planner, so a plan made in the planner alone can be out of date. (London Northwestern Railway, changes to train times; the 26 to 29 October notice is here.)
September’s works, including the Sunday 20 September closure between Euston and Watford Junction until 16:00 for an urgent bridge removal, have all passed.
What a normal Sunday looks like on this line
Even without engineering work, Sunday is a materially different railway, and this is worth knowing beyond one weekend:
- The first Sunday train is the 06:15, against 05:03 on a weekday.
- That first train is always slow. On both Sunday 13 September and Sunday 11 October it takes 1h 59m to 2h 01m, because it works round the Sunday morning engineering allowance.
- After it, a normal Sunday settles at 1h 17m to 1h 26m. That is the range we measured across the late morning on 13 September and 11 October.
- No Sunday train gets close to the weekday 51 minutes. The quickest we found on either ordinary Sunday was 1h 07m, late morning. Sunday costs you at least a quarter of an hour on the fastest weekday run, and usually closer to half an hour.
Sampled from the National Rail timetable for Thursday 3 and Sunday 13 September and Sunday 11 October 2026, checked on 2 September 2026.
The 21-minute question
The single most useful habit for a Northampton commuter is checking the calling pattern before boarding rather than taking the next train that arrives.
Twenty-one minutes each way is three and a half hours a week. It is the difference between a commute you can sustain and one you resent, and it costs nothing to avoid beyond a glance at the board.
What it costs
Season ticket prices for Northampton to London Euston, any permitted route:
| Season | Price | Works out at |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | £183.80 | £36.76 a working day |
| Monthly | £705.80 | Roughly 3.8 weekly tickets |
| Annual | £7,352.00 | Roughly 40 weekly tickets |
The annual ticket costs about the same as forty weekly ones, so it pays for itself if you commute more than about forty weeks a year, which most full-time commuters do after holiday. Route-specific and Travelcard variants are priced separately and cost more, so check which one you are being sold before you buy. Prices are as listed on Trainline in August 2026.
Northampton to London train prices for a single trip
Checked on London Northwestern Railway’s own route page on 15 September 2026, these are the fares the operator lists for Northampton to London Euston:
| Ticket | Price | What it ties you to |
|---|---|---|
| Advance single | From £9 | One named train, booked ahead |
| Super Off-Peak Day Single | £20.60 | The quietest times only, travel that day |
| Super Off-Peak Day Return | £31.80 | Out and back the same day at the quietest times |
| Off-Peak Day Single | £34.30 | Any off-peak train that day |
The number to notice is the £31.80 Super Off-Peak Day Return, which costs less than the £34.30 Off-Peak Day Single. If you are going down and coming back the same day and can avoid the busiest trains, the return is the cheaper ticket even if you only need one direction. The £9 advance fare is the lowest price on the route but is fixed to a specific train, so the cheap fare and the fast train are not always the same train, and it is worth checking both before booking.
The operator’s route page does not publish the Anytime fare for this journey, so if you need to travel in the morning peak, price it on the day you are going before you assume anything.
Railcards take a third off most of these fares. London Northwestern’s railcard page puts most national railcards at £35 a year or £80 for three years. At a third off, the £31.80 Super Off-Peak Day Return comes down to £21.20. Two catches: the 16-25 and 26-30 railcards carry a £12 minimum fare between 04:30 and 10:00 on weekdays, excluding bank holidays and Advance tickets, and only the 16-17 Saver and Disabled Persons Railcard are generally valid at any time of day, including the morning peak.
Northampton to London by car or coach
Two other ways of doing Northampton to London, and both are slower than the train.
Driving is roughly 70 miles, mostly down the M1, which is about an hour and three quarters into central London before traffic does anything to it. The cost is the part people forget. Anyone driving into the Congestion Charge zone pays £18 a day if they pay on the day or in advance, £21 if they leave it until midnight on the third day after travelling, and the charge applies 7am to 6pm on weekdays and noon to 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays. A vehicle that does not meet the Ultra Low Emission Zone standard pays the ULEZ charge on top of that, and parking on top of both. (Transport for London)
The coach is one departure a day: National Express service 440 from Northampton North Gate bus station, calling at Golders Green, Finchley Road, Baker Street, Marble Arch and Victoria Coach Station. Fares start at £17.50 one way including the £1.50 booking fee, and the fastest run is 1 hour 25 minutes to Golders Green, the first London stop, with Victoria later still. That is at least 35 minutes longer than the fastest train, and a single daily departure leaves no room to change your plans. (National Express)
Northampton station itself
The station is on Black Lion Hill at the western edge of the town centre, a few minutes’ walk from the Grosvenor Centre and Market Square.
- Step-free access to all platforms. The station is rated Category A for accessibility, with lifts and accessible toilets including changing facilities.
- 866 parking spaces, of which 12 are accessible bays. That is a large station car park by the standards of a town this size, and it is the reason a lot of people from Daventry, Towcester and the villages drive in rather than looking for a closer station.
- Ticket office open 06:00 to 19:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 20:00 on Sunday.
- Sheltered waiting areas, refreshments, shops and bicycle storage on site.
Peak times on this route are roughly 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:30 to 18:30 on weekdays, which is when off-peak tickets stop being valid and when the four-an-hour frequency applies.
Getting to the station
If you are driving in, the station car park is the obvious answer, but the town centre car parks are a short walk away and some are cheaper for a full day. Our guide to Northampton roadworks, parking and travel lists current tariffs and covers the premium parking zone that starts on 17 August 2026, along with the car parks that are closed or reduced this autumn.
