No trains from Northampton on Christmas Day and little on Boxing Day. Network Rail's 2026 works are unannounced; last year the line south of town shut 13 days.
Nobody will travel by train from Northampton on Christmas Day, and Boxing Day is likely to be almost as quiet. The question that matters is the days either side, and for 2026 that answer does not exist yet. National Rail has published its Christmas and New Year 2026/27 page with the fixed points, but the engineering works that decide whether the Northampton to Euston line runs at all between Christmas and New Year are still, in its words, “to be published here when available”. Last year those works closed the line south of Northampton for 13 days. This page gives what is settled, what happened last year, and the bus arrangements last Christmas, so you can plan in outline now and come back for the detail.
The quick answer
- Christmas Day, Friday 25 December: no trains anywhere on the network. London Northwestern Railway confirms it on its bank holiday page.
- Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December: National Rail says “most train operators will have no service”. London Northwestern’s Boxing Day plan is not yet published.
- Engineering works 24 December to 4 January: not yet announced for the West Coast Main Line. Last year Hanslope Junction closed the line between Milton Keynes and Northampton from 24 December to 5 January, with buses in place of trains.
- Birmingham New Street is already confirmed for major works from Thursday 24 to Monday 28 December, which affects Northampton to Birmingham journeys.
What National Rail has confirmed for 2026/27
National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 page sets four things down.
- There will be “no National Rail services on Christmas Day as usual”.
- On Boxing Day “most train operators will have no service”, with limited services from some operators possible.
- Train services “on many routes will finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve”. Its guide to the last trains out of London will be published later.
- “A considerable number of engineering and improvement projects will be undertaken by Network Rail” between Thursday 24 December and Monday 4 January, and the specific works are still to be published.
The one route-specific fact already on the page is Birmingham New Street: “major engineering work taking place from Thursday 24 December to Monday 28 December inclusive. Journeys to, from or through Birmingham New Street will be significantly disrupted.” London Northwestern’s Northampton to Birmingham trains run into New Street, so that is a five-day problem for anyone heading north for Christmas.
London Northwestern Railway’s own bank holiday page lists Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 2027 as “information will be published when available”. Only Christmas Day is settled: “No trains will operate on Christmas Day.”
What happened last Christmas on the Northampton line
The reason to plan early is what Network Rail did last year. Its announcement of 7 October 2025 set out a 22-day programme on the West Coast Main Line from 24 December 2025 to 15 January 2026. The piece that hit Northampton was Hanslope Junction, south of the town, where £26 million of track and foundation renewal ran from 24 December to 5 January. For those 13 days there were “no trains between Milton Keynes and Northampton / Rugby”, with rail replacement buses across the gap.
In practice that meant a Northampton to Euston journey over Christmas week was a bus to Milton Keynes and a train from there. London Northwestern’s own notice advised passengers to complete London journeys before Christmas Eve or after 2 January. Network Rail’s West Coast South route says its “timetables are planned up to 12 months in advance” and that Christmas is “often the most practical” time for major upgrades, so a further closure somewhere on the line between Euston and Rugby this Christmas is likely. Whether it lands on the Northampton loop again is the detail to wait for. The announcement came on 7 October last year, so expect this year’s in October.
Our train times page has the normal Northampton to Euston pattern and the journey times, which is the baseline any Christmas timetable will be cut from.
Christmas Eve: earlier last trains
National Rail’s page says services on many routes finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve, and that its list of last trains from London will follow. Last year the Hanslope Junction closure began on Christmas Eve itself, so through trains between Northampton and Euston had already stopped by the time the early finish mattered. Until the 2026 works are published, treat Christmas Eve as uncertain and plan any London journey for the 23rd or earlier if it cannot move.
Buses over Christmas: last year’s pattern
Stagecoach Midlands runs almost every Northampton town service, and its Christmas timetables page for 2025 set out a pattern that has been broadly the same for years. These are last year’s arrangements, not this year’s.
| Date | Service |
|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | Normal service with some evening journeys not running |
| Christmas Day | No service, except the Greencore Northampton service |
| Boxing Day | No service, except the Greencore and Pineham Northampton services |
| 27 December | Saturday service |
| 28 December | Sunday service |
| 29 and 30 December | Saturday service |
| New Year's Eve | Saturday service with some evening journeys not running |
| New Year's Day | No service, other than the 60, which ran a Saturday service |
The Greencore and Pineham services are works buses for the two big employers, so for practical purposes there were no public buses in Northampton on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. With Boxing Day 2026 on a Saturday and a substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December, the shape will change: watch for whether Stagecoach treats the Monday as a Sunday.
Parking and roads
West Northamptonshire Council has not published any Christmas parking concession for Northampton’s town centre car parks for 2026. The standing tariff is £3 for any stay on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, and Christmas Day is free in every council car park; the full table is on our parking page, which is the place to check for any change once the council’s Christmas programme is announced. Road closures for the Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday 21 November are on our switch-on page, and anything longer-running on the approaches is on the roadworks and travel page.
What is still to be confirmed, and when
- Network Rail’s Christmas works for the West Coast Main Line: expected in October, based on the 7 October 2025 announcement last year.
- London Northwestern’s Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year timetables: the operator says they will be published when available, usually in November.
- Stagecoach Midlands festive timetables: usually published in late November or early December.
- Council Christmas parking: nothing announced for 2026.
We will update this page as each one lands.
